After a 14-year break, the “Final Destination” series returns with its sixth installment: Final Destination: Bloodlines, directed by Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky, once again unleashes the unmistakable mix of black humor and spectacular death traps that have made the franchise famous.
The story centers on college student Stefani Reyes, who has been haunted for weeks by an apocalyptic nightmare in the Skyview Tower of 1968. She lives out this vision by searching for her estranged grandmother Iris in order to solve the riddle of her family’s mysterious struggle for survival. Together, they and Stefani’s family try to break through Death’s inevitable plan before the next catastrophe occurs.
The first catastrophe in the Skyview Tower’s glass restaurant is considered one of the best and longest of the entire series. It nonchalantly sets the tone for the mixture of horror and macabre comedy that runs through the entire film.
As usual, Bloodlines shines with Rube Goldberg-like accidents in which banal everyday objects become deadly machines – from rotating ceiling fans to the insidious blender. In between, there are repeated references to earlier parts, such as Tony Todd’s final appearance, which adds emotional depth to the farewell thriller. Despite all the creative escapades, the protagonists remain rather sketchy. Their personal motivations are neglected, resulting in a lack of emotional attachment. Towards the end, the movie drifts somewhat into the expected and ends less subtly than some fans had hoped. The grand finale seems surprisingly conventional compared to the introduction.
Commercially, Bloodlines is a direct hit: with over 285 million US dollars worldwide, it is the most successful part of the series. Critics have honored the comeback with overwhelmingly positive reviews; the score on Rotten Tomatoes is an impressive 92%.
Final Destination: Bloodlines delivers exactly what fans of the series expect: an explosion of gore spectacle, black humor and clever death sequences. Anyone who can do without in-depth character dramas and instead wants to enjoy a rollercoaster ride of gruesome ideas will be well entertained here.
